It is believed to contain around 300 elephants, 60 tigers and 40 rhinos but the chances of seeing one of these is slim. There are also around 5000 orangutan as well as gibbons, the white breasted Thomas leaf monkey, the long and pig tailed macaques, the white handed gibbon and the cuddly black siamang. Also living in the park are clouded leopards, marbled cat, crocodile and sun bears and over 300 bird species including the rhinoceros hornbill and the helmeted hornbill. The Rafflesia Arnoldi, largest flower in the world, can also be found within the park.
Medan
Medan is the capital city of North Sumatra province, Indonesia. It is the largest city in Sumatra and the Indonesia's third most populous after Jakarta and Surabaya, with approximately 2.5 million people. Medan means 'field' in Bahasa Indonesia and Malay languages but the name actually originated from the Karonese word 'madan' which means to 'get better' or 'healthy'.
The city located in the north of the province, and has a nearby harbour Belawan, and an international airport Polonia International Airport. It is situated in the fertile swamp at the junction of the Deli and Babura rivers where the original village of Medan Putri was founded by Raja Guru Patimpus in 1590.
The city has a mix of communities, reflecting its pre- and post-independence history. It is famous throughout Indonesia as the home of the Batak people, although the ancestral sites of these people are scattered throughout northern Sumatra. In addition, there is a large ethnic Javanese comunity, largely made of of the descendants of people shipped from Java in the last century as part of the government's transmigration policy, an attempt to relieve the chronic overcrowding on Java.

CLIMATE.
The climate is tropical, but due to its many highlands, temperatures can be lower than one expects. Temperatures are approximately between 22-30 degrees Celsius. The rainfall differs from area to area, but averages 1.000-4.000mm per year. The relative humidity is 70-90% in lowlands. The year can be divided in two major seasons, dry season from February to August and wet season from September to January. However, the difference between seasons is not as big as in other parts of Indonesia. The change of season is also normally extra wet. The dry season is of course the best time for tracking, to visit nature parks and for the visibility of animals, etc.
